La Danza 2.0. Paesaggi coreografici del nuovo millennio (Dance 2.0. Choreographic Landscapes of the New Millennium) is the—deceivingly— simple title of Alessandro Pontremoli’s new book on contemporary dance, presented in the context of the Torino Danza Festival on September 29, 2018. Pontremoli, associate professor of performing art disciplines at the University of Turin, member of the advisory committee of Dance Ministry of Heritage and Culture, and former president of the Italian Association for Research on Dance (AIRDanza, 2004–2010), has published extensively on dance history and theories. If with La Danza: Storia, Teorie, Estetica nel 900 (Dance: History, Theories and Aesthetics in the 20 Century) he took us to the threshold of the millennium, with La Danza 2.0 the Italian scholar takes the leap into the contemporary and embarks on the challenging and valuable task of offering an overview of the Italian and international dance landscape of the last thirty years, approached through a range of theoretical lenses, such as phenomenology, perception theories, dance and theater studies, and cultural studies. The ease and aptness with which the author summons the thought of different philosophers—among whom stand out Giorgio Agamben, Paul Ricoueur, Jean-Luc Nancy, Nicolas Borriaud, and the architect Gilles Cl ement—make for a book whose richness in philosophical and theoretical anchors addresses diverse interests and audiences, thus reminding one of Laurence Louppe’s essential text Poetics of Contemporary Dance (1997). Pontremoli engages in a timely exploration of contemporary dance and its modes of producing, disseminating and receiving new knowledge, new bodies, and new modus vivendi. He intertwines theory and practice throughout, reflecting on the questions and propositions raised by dance “as an emerging field of knowledge” and drawing on concrete examples taken from Italian and international contemporary dance companies.
