Abstract The current study focused on the complications and issues affiliated to universities’ leadership. It investigated the relationships of managerial competency and learning orientation with job performance of university leaders. The study also examined the mediating role of entrepreneurial leadership in these relationships. The study used a survey design and collected data (N = 242) from leaders of public sector HEIs. The proposed model was tested using partial least squares (PLS) technique. The findings suggested that managerial competency and learning orientation were positively related to job performance. In addition, the findings revealed that entrepreneurial leadership mediated the relationships of managerial competency and learning orientation with job performance. This study provides significant implications for theory and investigations on strengthening university leadership and provides evidence as to how such leadership has significance for impressive job performance. Finally, the study provides important implications for improving university leadership.
