This is a general issue. Submissions, however, permit groupings that suggest something of the range and diversity of genre-study under the rubric South African Literature or, more broadly, Southern African Literature. Voss reviews two books on Bushman/San expression, ‘literary’ and ‘social’, if indeed such distinctions had meaning for the First People of the region, or meaning for their descendants today. What remains ‘current’ from the past? Kaschula looks backwards and forwards to the significance of praises to Nelson Mandela. From the oral to the written, Mthatiwa and Chapman revalue, from a current perspective, two very different ‘white’ poets, the British expatriate in Malawi, David Kerr, and the South African (is he really South African?) poet’s poet, the enigmatic Sydney Clouts. The novel form also provides unusual comparisons. Gumede subjects the contemporary Zulu novelist, LPMolefe, to a ‘counter-patriarchal’ reading while Dimitriu considers whether JM Coetzee’s The Schooldays of Jesus is a novelistic or philosophical discourse, or an in-between text: a novel of ideas. Since its inception Current Writing has wished to explore boundaries, whether aesthetic or theoretical, and Barendse turns to the relatively recent, at least in South Africa, human-animal interaction in literature. To conclude the issue, the internationally renowned poet and commentator Antjie Krog raises provocative questions on how “to write liberty”. Current Writing 30 (2), 2018, is a ‘theme’ issue, The Ethics of Memory in the Writing of PostApartheid South Africa, edited by Judith Lütge Coullie. No further submissions are invited. Current Writing 31 (1), 2019, is a general issue.
