Settler-colonial temporality and ‘phantom sound’ in Mohanad Yaqubi’s Off Frame

ABSTRACT Bringing together scholarship on settler-colonialism, film theory and sound studies, this paper is an attempt to grapple with the problem of settler-colonial time. Building on the work of Patrick Wolfe, Samera Esmeir and Mark Rifkin, I argue that settler-colonialism presents immediate and important complications for thinking about historiography, time and cinematic time as well. Because as a structure of social development, settler-colonialism unfolds amorphously without very often taking the shape of singular events, acts or actors, it presents challenges for what we might call a prosecutional or event-centric discourse about violence. In this paper, I explore Chion’s theory of ‘phantom sound’, which holds – I think – great promise for cinematically dealing with settler-colonial time. Alongside this, I offer a close-reading of Mohanad Yaqubi’s 2015 documentary Off Frame AKA Revolution until Victory as a unique deployment of phantom sound and a confrontation with settler-colonialism.
