This article discusses the causes of Lev Shestov’s psychological and worldview crises that he experienced in 1895, forcing the thinker to abandon his idealist philosophy and to embark on a path of groundlessness and adogmatism. Furthermore, the author traces the stages of Shestov becoming a philosopher, beginning with his early works on Shakespeare and Vladimir Solovyov. According to Silver-Age polemicist, translator, and poet Varvara Malakhieva-Mirovich, Shestov’s philosophy of tragedy was born of the thinker’s own personal drama. The encounters between Malakhieva-Mirovich and Shestov left a noticeable trace in Malakhieva-Mirovich’s worldview and work: she assimilated Shestov’s ideas about “creativity from nothing,” “the seventh day of creation,” and hopelessness as a source of hope.
