a rhetorician, especially through her work in visual rhetoric. Fleckenstein contents that, “Left unexplored is the work, especially the memory work, performed by women as imagesmiths— significant figures in the visual rhetorical tradition—as their use of images circulates across the permeable boundaries of the private and the public” (139). Fleckenstein fills this space by situating the parlor as a public and private space and the photo album as a strategic example of visual rhetoric. Both of these chapters are particularly compelling as they serve as illustrations of and theoretical frameworks for conducting recovery work on unknown women. Despite its strengths, the edited collection is not without its shortcomings. Except for three essays (written by Martin, Presbey, and Quandahl), the collection focuses on the narratives of white, middleto upper-class women in the nineteenth and twentieth century—a detriment the editors themselves acknowledge (259). Additionally, in a collection emphasizing archival methods, readers may expect more essays focusing on unknown women rather than reexaminations of known figures. Overall, Gaillet and Bailey, along with each of the collection contributors, deliver a noteworthy contribution to feminist rhetorical scholarship. Remembering Women Differently provides the background for students to use the chapters as research starting points. The theoretical frameworks and case studies also are indispensable to feminist rhetoric and publicmemory scholars conducting similar research and, hopefully, they help ensure that in the future even more women who have been overlooked will have their rhetorical efforts remembered.
