The ‘Three Colours of Truth’ (Tri tsveta pravdy) exhibition was held at the Museum of Contemporary History in Moscow from 30 May to 9 September 2018 to mark the centenary of the Civil War in Russia. As reflected in the title, the exhibition emphasized the contested nature of memories of the Civil War. The walls and floors of the exhibition space were painted starkly in the colours of three main movements in the Civil War: Whites, Reds, and Greens (‘peasant insurgents’) (Figure 1). The exhibition involved collaboration between the Museum of Contemporary History, the State MuseumExhibition Centre (ROSIZO), and the Russian State Archive of Socio-Political History (RGASPI), with the assistance of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. It provided a significant indication of the approach of the Kremlin and key Russian cultural institutions to the centenary of the Civil War. Presented in both English and Russian in the summer of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, it was intended to appeal to foreign visitors as well as a domestic audience.
