turn-around in 1938 extends far into the realms of the politburo and the party administration. This book’s focus lies on the trials, and in this regard, the author maximizes the ‘yield’ from the source material available. On the one hand, one might expect a more comprehensive view on the court proceedings, since the book is about perpetrators on trial. Verdicts only play a marginal role in this reading. As some defendants were repeatedly put before trial, one would like to know more about the broader sentencing practices. On the other hand, the trials are the analytical and narrative framework for a book on the Great Terror. Viola uses the second storyline to underpin the first. She is interested in the practical implementation of terror and the mindset of those responsible for it and the book lives up to this claim. It is a pioneering work about the mechanisms and the logics of the mass operations that were determined by a complex set of institutional, geographical, and psychological factors. This setting was functioning due to ideological belief – a belief that remained unwavering in the face of their own henchmen.
