Mario Vargas Llosa (Arequipa, Peru, 1936) won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2010. He rose to prominence with his first novel La ciudad y los perros (The Time of the Hero) (1963), and has been a leading figure ever since. His many novels include Conversation in the Cathedral (1969), Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter (1977), The War of the End of the World (1981), and The Feast of the Goat (2000). His selected essays and journalism appeared in translation as Making Waves (1996).
