Multicultural Architecture, a two-day workshop was hosted by the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation (ADI), Deakin University in October 2018. The premise of the workshop convened by Mirjana Lozanovska, Louise Johnson, and Michele Lobo was that although migrant architecture has evolved and existed throughout the history of Australian society, it is yet to be integrated into symbolic narratives of national belonging. The workshop brought together an interdisciplinary nation-wide team of scholars, planners, policy makers, architects, and representatives from public institutions to think about the possibilities for a revised and more inclusive architectural history. It followed on from the successful 2017 Symposium titled Aesthetic Anxiety that focused on encounters with migrant architecture. This time, however, we were joined by Samer Akkach (University of Adelaide), Dijana Alic (UNSWSydney), Daniel Grinceri (University of Western Australia) and Iris Levin (Swinburne University) who provided novel scholarly insights. The tone of the workshop began developing when Lozanovska invited participants to join her in thinking theoretically about the concept of taxonomy and how it could be applied in classifying migrant architecture. Through a focus on design, form, typology, function, and ethnicity, interesting questions emerged that moved the discussion beyond the multiculturalism of food and festivals. This theoretical thinking was followed by a convivial train journey to Dandenong, one of the most culturally diverse suburbs in Melbourne and indeed, Australia. We were met by Jenny Pemberton-Webb, Place Manager of Activity Centres Revitalisation Team, City of Greater Dandenong who organised the day and provided comprehensive insights into policy initiatives. Together with Phin Murphy, a member of landscape architects commissioned by Local Council for the State supported $290 million Revitalising Central Dandenong Project, they articulated how the local community’s shared vision of place could be materialised through the process of design thinking.

然而这一次,加入我们的还有 Samer Akkach(阿德莱德大学)、Dijana Alic(悉尼新南威尔士大学)、Daniel Grinceri(西澳大利亚大学)和 Iris Levin(斯威本大学),他们提供了新颖的学术见解。
