assumptions about to whom (if anyone) Romanticism belongs. These thinkers helped my students reconceive Romanticism as a reading alongside and with its othered but consequential co-legislators, so that we might trace “the same story” but as “told in a different voice, with different inflections and modes of expression” (Hessell 14). The course was indebted to these and many other scholars, whose work my students became familiar with in small excerpts that helped lay the groundwork for bigger questions and ideas. I am grateful for the privileges of job security and institutional access. This course would not have existed without them. I am likewise thankful to have entered the field at a precarious but nevertheless exciting moment, wherein it is being reformed by long-neglected calls for a Romanticism that confronts its own historical globality and heterogeneity, its knotty contradictions and devastating aftershocks. Situating British Romanticism in the Everglades brought the literature of the period “home” for my students. It also served as an opportunity to explore how all knowledges are situated, their material specificities defamiliarizing truths which otherwise seem universally acknowledged. I am lucky to have had the opportunity to undertake this exceedingly momentary but nevertheless momentous reading of Romanticism with this particular community of students, in this particular place, at this particular time.
