ABSTRACT ‘Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but the thing dies in the process and the innards are discouraging to any but the pure scientific mind.’ E.B. White (1999., p. 303). How we understand humour in psychotherapy is a challenge to explore, due to the ways in which we obtain knowledge, and risk a dissection that could cause the death of the phenomena itself. The following work attempts to explore the phenomena through detailing from experience. The study explores therapists lived experience of humour when working with young clients. The researcher collected data from seven therapists, from which the essential essence of the experience was drawn out using a discovery orientated approach. The therapists experienced humour as emotional, temporal and multi-faceted, with an ability to convey multiple meaning simultaneously. Humour was seen to facilitate relational desires which may not feel acceptable or appropriate to vocalise within the therapeutic relationship. Through humour, friendship, anger, maternal care, sexual desire and role modelling, all found expression which gave therapists material to reflect upon. Thus, the present study suggests that humour can function as a haven for feelings that neither the therapist nor young person feel able to address.
