ABSTRACT This article reassesses Laetitia-Matilda Hawkins (1759–1835), a prolific author whose late novels Rosanne (1814) and Heraline (1821) reveal her as more complex than hitherto recognized on social and political issues debated in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Hawkins has gained some attention for her Anti-Jacobin 1793 Letters on the Female Mind, her riposte to Helen Maria Williams’s celebratory descriptions of France in the early days after the Revolution, and perhaps Hawkins’s conservatism there has kept scholars from exploring her novels. Through attention to her language use and situations on which she dwells from 1793 on, this article examines how Hawkins, in her Letters, Rosanne, and Heraline, consistently focuses on French Revolutionary ideology, the nature and role of the sexes, proper familial relations, patriarchal responsibilities, Britain’s social structure, and the role of religion, while increasingly suggesting that what protects individuals’ and communities’ well-being is difficult to predict.
