Did Shakespeare in Hamlet subscribe anachronistically to Emmanuel Levinas’s notions about alleviating solipsism through relationships centred in extreme encounters with otherness? This essay, in presenting Levinas’s relevant views in brief, relates them to a reading of Hamlet that responds in the affirmative to the above question, but also attempts to move beyond the embargo on ‘spirit’ practised by the philosopher in order to situate the play within the spiritual (and spiritist) understanding of its own era, a move which helps emphasize the importance of ordinary relationships (even beyond the grave) in relieving personal isolation.
