The articles in this issue of The English Academy Review are all, in one way or another, concerned with reactions to oppression and conflict. In all cases, the primary focus is on texts that come from the later decades of the twentieth century or the first years of the twenty-first. Many of these primary texts, while set in contemporary times, also look back to oppressions and conflicts of the past, and to ways in which these have shaped the present. Issues pertaining to colonization and slavery recur, as does an African context. Some of the articles also actively consider ways of reflecting on oppressions and, in the process of recording these ways, provide forms of resolution. The first article is Myrtle Hooper’s ‘Can Themba, Jean Hart and “Crepuscule”: Remembering Sophiatown’. Themba’s short story is based on his brief relationship with Hart, an Englishwoman who lived in Johannesburg for a time. She and Themba belonged to what Hooper aptly labels as ‘the Drum crowd’.
