ABSTRACT Following the 1858 apparitions of the Virgin Mary in Lourdes, the small French town became a world-renowned sanctuary city and a favoured site of devotion for miracle-seeking pilgrims. As such, Lourdes is the site of a unique convergence for medical and religious discourses. This article explores how miracles—and more particularly the miraculés themselves—are portrayed in several contemporary texts. As narratives about Lourdes take sick bodies as their focus, they highlight the entanglement of medicine and religion and offer a unique insight into the fin-de-siècle’s medical epistemology.
