This afterword presents a personal reflection both on the papers in the Journal of Wetland Archaeology’s Special Edition on Bog Bodies, as well as the wider scientific and cultural value of these remains. It points to new avenues of research and collaboration, emphasises the need for international standards and guides for future discoveries, and promotes the value of more sustainable research using existing museum and archival material. Finally, it celebrates their ongoing role as a source of inspiration in contemporary literature, pointing to the importance of the ‘afterlives’ of such remains.
