ABSTRACT

Social workers are called upon and expected to work with immigrants in culturally appropriate ways, particularly during a time of increased xenophobia. Yet, few are given the educational tools necessary to answer this call. A global human rights lens, informed by theories on work with immigrants, can provide a framework for social work educators and practitioners to traverse the values, knowledge, and skill necessary for culturally relevant work with Latinx immigrants. This paper provides a socio-political context for the migration experience, and a discussion of necessary course content to prepare emerging social workers to serve this community. We suggest that four theories and approaches provide the foundation to informed practice with immigrants. Suggestions for teaching and preparing emerging social workers for work with Latinx immigrant communities are provided. The teaching methodology relies on Paulo Freire’s and other adult learning theories which integrate and build on the lived experience of adult learners.
