ABSTRACT During the nineteenth century, there was a rising interest in the development of Irish industry, which led to support for economic protectionism, and coincided with a cultural revival. Consumers embraced the Celtic style as an expression of national identity and “practical patriotism.” In the 1850s, a ceramic collection set up by Sir Robert Kane at the Museum of Industry demonstrated the use of natural resources for manufacture. This later formed the basis of the ceramic collection at the National Museum of Ireland founded in the 1870s, where the curator, Thomas Longfield, continued Kane’s work. The art ceramics acquired by the Museum from the Vodrey Dublin Pottery in the 1880s included examples of styles popular in the fashionable Aesthetic taste. Whilst producing art ceramics for followers of international taste, Frederick Vodrey also responded to an interest in the Celtic style amongst leading members of Dublin society. Vodrey and the curators shared an interest in the dissemination of design theories for education. George Coffey was an expert on antiquities and the Celtic style whilst Longfield wrote about the origins of architectural styles. Analysis of the Vodrey Dublin Pottery objects in the collection reveals the relationship between the design process and theories of ornament.
