ABSTRACT

The Celtic legend of a woman destined to free Ireland and the resonances of this myth with the story of Joan of Arc was intentionally and calculatedly employed by Maud Gonne and her supporters. Gonne understood the powerful underpinnings of the story of Joan of Arc, drawing on them to form a powerful persona that still permeates popular memory around Gonne to this day. An in-depth study of the title of “Ireland’s Joan of Arc” reveals new insight into Gonne’s motivations and her influences, and into the interconnectedness of medievalism, Celticism and nationalism in Ireland in the nineteenth and early twentieth century.
