ABSTRACT

In about 1871 Sir Samuel Ferguson conceived a plan for a co-publishing venture, allying Dublin and London publishers in order to create better opportunities for Irish writers. The writers would be subject to his approval and their work would be distinguished by a fountain symbol on the title page, hence fountain series. The plan may be seen to represent Ferguson’s historical position and ideological outlook as he sought to develop ‘an Irish school of letters”, as he put it, “of a solid & manly character as contradistinguished from the conventional Irish literature of the past”, consisting of works of “History, Belles Lettres and Science”. The conception of the plan and its execution are related and some of the reasons for its limited success explored. It has not previously been reported.
