ABSTRACT This article examines the nature of violence in the confessional state through a diocesan lens. Establishing the Russian Empire’s religious policy in the midst of near constant warfare, Catherine II created a system dependent upon violence and its legacies. Through time, violence transitioned from somatic (bodily) to structural as the confessional state organized religions into a tightly regulated hierarchy. Reinforced by latent violence, the state used positive and negative inducements to influence religious behaviour. In the Black Sea Region, the focus of this study, wars extended imperial borders, which in turn opened up new space for Russian Orthodox spiritual jurisdiction. Subsequently, diocesan expansion occurred in tandem with military and political circumstances. During the Crimean War, latent confessional violence erupted into somatic violence. Completing a cycle begun by the wars of Catherine II, the resulting depopulation and migration once again cleared the way for a new diocese in Crimea.
