The year 2020 is one that will be remembered for so many reasons, not least of which was the immense rate of change. Natural disasters, mass social uprisings, civic defiance and political impiety, vast economic damage, and, most of all, the coronavirus pandemic profoundly disrupted everyday life for millions of people in the United States and across the globe. There will be communal trauma from the pandemic’s impact on our democracy, national policies, individual and family economic situations, and devastating experiences with mortality. By the end of 2020, deaths and infection totals from COVID-19 were daily reports on all sorts of media outlets, often to be disputed or dismissed when the data and science conflicted with the distorted worldviews of many in a sort of collective cognitive dissonance. As much as people are desperate for 2021 to be “normal” again, the coronavirus and its pervasive effect on society will not be so easily done away with—even with the long-awaited deployment of an effective vaccine. In its wake, the pandemic unearthed the deep systemic shortcoming in population health, economic security, and equal access to opportunities and resources. Entrenched inequity—already the source of so much menace for communities of color, rural populations, those who have disabilities, and many others—only intensified. The social safety net, such as it was, became even more stretched when the organizations and networks who serve people and their neighborhoods were, practically overnight, severely compromised due to the pandemic.
