In more than 60 years since the founding of artificial intelligence (AI) as a formal academic discipline, rapid advances in technology have driven an enormous increase in interest in the field of study. AI subfields, including machine learning, neural networks, and the social implications of AI, have initiated new approaches to research and emergent questions. Of particular interest is the study of AI at its intersection with the study of communication. Like AI, communication, too, overlaps with other fields like sociology, anthropology, economics, and computer science, among others, while focusing on human information exchange in its various forms. Despite an increasing scholarly attention of artificial intelligence, AI/communication studies concerning social, political, cultural, and ethical aspects of machine intelligence, interactions among agents, and social artifacts remain ripe for exploration. This special issue tackles these unexplored research areas with special emphasis on conditions, components, and consequences of cognitive, attitudinal, affective, and behavioral dimensions toward communication and AI. This special issue epitomizes communication scholarship on Artificial Intelligence (AI) with a total of six articles. Topics vary from interactions between humans and robots through news representation of artificial intelligence to AI-based news credibility. The collection of the special issue offers implications for not only theoretical and methodological perspectives, but policy-makers and practitioners alike.
