ABSTRACT Using the concept of interpersonal dominance, we explored how supervisors’ communication of dominance was related to employee outcomes. Results from two studies (Study 1: N = 307; Study 2: N = 303) revealed that messages signaling influence and focus/poise were positively related to job satisfaction, motivation, organizational commitment, employee empowerment, and accomplishment, yet negatively related to exhaustion and cynicism. Regression analyses determined that influence and focus/poise were the strongest predictors of job satisfaction, motivation, commitment, and empowerment. Focus/poise and panache were the best predictors of personal accomplishment. Finally, conversational control was the strongest predictor of exhaustion and cynicism.
