Moreover, the fact that Mexican merchants were able to resist the efforts of Seville merchants to put an end to the transpacific trade only serves as further evidence of the limits of peninsular interests in transpacific matters. As Gasch-Tomás notes, in reference to the work of Mariano Bonialian and others, ‘the Atlantic’—Iberian and Northern—did not manage to assume control over this system until the eighteenth century. This resilience of the seventeenth-century transpacific economy does not fit seamlessly into an Atlantic-centered frame. Just as the author emphasizes the composite nature of politics in the Spanish Empire, so the evidence warrants a similar framework that allows for multiple, semi-autonomous economic centers. Notwithstanding these reservations, The Atlantic World and the Manila galleons is nonetheless an impressive work of research with important archival findings. Scholars of transpacific, Latin American, and Spanish imperial histories will benefit from Gasch-Tomás’s analysis of the microeconomics of transpacific trade. And for the field of global history, this study highlights the importance of the early modern transpacific economy to the broader story of globalization and its ramifications.
