metadata schemas provide a useful overview. The discussion of the roles of taxonomies and folksonomies for the management of different resource types, including social media, will benefit any information professional trying to understand the requirements for individual metadata elements. Issues surrounding the management of ‘big data’ and the management of research data are also given significant coverage. It was fitting, I believe, to conclude the book with a chapter on the politics and ethics of metadata. With changes to Data Protection legislation, the ever-present Freedom of Information Act and the growing importance of human rights and ethical discussions in the field of data management, it was important to reflect on these issues as well as the importance of making sure our data is secure. Information and data inequality are also considered. This final chapter re-assesses the role of metadata now and in the future and discusses the importance of a planned workflow for metadata management. Haynes concludes with a discussion of the inevitable power dynamics that exist when dealing with the management of metadata and issues the following rallying cry for future information professionals:
