The Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary defines research as “studious inquiry or examination; especially: investigation or experimentation aimed at the discovery and interpretation of facts, revision of accepted theories or laws in the light of new facts, or practical applications of such new or revised theories or laws.” A doctoral dissertation is a document which is submitted by the author where he/she presents his/her research and findings in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. In North American countries, the word dissertation is generally used whereas in European and some other countries the term thesis is generally used for doctoral research work. The present bibliography comprises research produced as doctoral dissertations and doctoral theses dealing with library cataloging, classification, and metadata. An attempt has been made to cover all the aspects of these topics so as to match the coverage of this bibliography with the scope of the journal, Cataloging & Classification Quarterly. Topics include but are not limited to: descriptive cataloging, classification and subject access, use and usability issues (related to bibliographic data, authority data, the catalog or other discovery platform), education and training for cataloging and classification, the internationalization of cataloging, the management of cataloging and related functions, the use of bibliographic or authority data by systems outside the OPAC, online retrieval, metadata standards, and cataloging related to specific materials or processes (such as digital resources, archives, special collections, maps and other cartographic and spatial materials, preservation). The current list includes research works published in the English language from all over the world, but chiefly in United States. It contains 170 titles, accepted in 1982 or later, that were available for online and database searching through November 25, 2019.
