The three preceding essays constitute a compelling contemporary journey into Fedor Dostoevskii’s controversial epilogue to Crime and Punishment. Katherine Bowers, Kate Holland, and Eric Naiman suggest original readings that reflect questions of theory and discourse which engage us today, while at the same time each enters into a generous, multi-faceted dialogue with earlier thinkers like Mikhail Bakhtin and Konstantin Mochulsky and onward to Carol Apollonio, Robert L. Belknap, Ilya Kliger, Tat’iana Kasatkina, Gary Saul Morson, Gary Rosenshield, Kathleen Scollins, and Sarah J. Young (to name only a very few). All have evaluated the epilogue and the degree of its organic or unnatural connection to the rest of Dostoevskii’s novel. The number of voices brought to bear in these three essays is remarkable, and it showcases the unceasing degree of multi-faceted, swirling dialogue that Dostoevskii consistently provokes. Moreover, there is productive, creative overlap among these essays themselves, as Bowers, Holland, and Naiman each engage with matters of genre, plot, narrative, voice, character, and time. These essays led me to think anew about Dostoevskii’s epilogue and to recall in what can only be described as a piercing way the words of T.S. Eliot in “Little Gidding” and “East Coker”—each part of his much longer work, Four Quartets. From “Little Gidding”:

摘自“ Little Gidding”:
