It is with great sorrow that we announce the death, on 24 August 2019, of Sonja Luehrmann, Associate Professor of Anthropology at Simon Fraser University. A scholar of religion, secularization, nationality, and history in the Soviet and post-Soviet settings, she leaves a dazzling c.v. but also a legion of academic collaborators and friends across the globe. Sonja began her academic career in her native Germany where she received an MA in Cultural Anthropology from Frankfurt University in 2000. Her MA research resulted in a thesis that formed the foundation for her first monograph, Alutiiq Villages Under Russian and U.S. Rule, published in 2008. By that time, she was enrolled in the doctoral program in History and Anthropology at the University of Michigan, where in 2009 she obtained her PhD. Her doctoral dissertation led to Secularism Soviet Style: Teaching Atheism and Religion in a Volga Republic (2011), a fascinating study of the relationship between atheist campaigns in Photograph courtesy of Ilya Vinkovetsky. 1,1-3 https://doi.org/10.1080/00085006.2020.1714875
