nal ceremonies were the crucial elements in how the Kashaya Pomo maintained their core values during the later years of colonialism. Metini Village: An Archaeological Study of Sustained Colonialism in Northern California provides a valuable methodological framework for a new archaeological praxis that moves away from a discipline that “keep(s) on digging” (Fagan 1995, 248) toward one that incorporates multiple field strategies employing lowimpact methods and uses archaeology as political practice by forging relationships with descendent communities and other stakeholders. The data that were generated are salient to the value of this approach, which can be used to answer numerous questions about the past. As Lightfoot and Gonzalez demonstrate, these methods allow for a thorough analysis of howNative communities negotiated colonialism at distinct periods in time and their persistence into the present day.
