tively providing a medium for merging intellectual rigour with aesthetic acumen. Furthermore, the contributors have demonstrated, once again, that far from inhabiting an isolated cultural backwater, African peoples have contributed mightily to the scholarly, cultural and artistic traditions of our world. Therefore, although most chapters are principally site or subject overviews, covering information likely already known to the specialist, the perspectives presented make the volume certainly deserving of a read and likely a position on an introductory syllabus. Thus, while it is indeed handsome, this volume provides further proof of the folly of judging a book by its cover, as Caravans of Gold is worthy of a place on anyWest Africanist’s bookshelf, not merely their coffee tables.
