This essay analyzes Elbert Hubbard’s 1911 Orpheum Vaudeville as I Have Found It, a nationally distributed advertisement for the Orpheum vaudeville circuit. While historians have argued that producers sold their performances through assurances of respectability and moral uprightness, we argue that Hubbard’s pamphlet courts patronage through a therapeutic rhetoric that appeals to the ideals enshrined in the Arts and Crafts Movement. This rhetoric attempted to assuage the malaise brought on by a perceived loss of individual control by recasting capitalism from a tool of corrupt industry to an instrument of personal prosperity. Given Hubbard’s celebrity and the broad circulation of his published work, this pamphlet offers insights into the ways that popular culture protected American capitalism in an era of widespread social and economic reform.
