Visionary Animal is by the French author and poet, Renaud Ego, who has been studying southern African rock art for some twenty years. His book is beautifully presented and could be mistaken for a coffee-table book; however, the textual content is academic at best and often speculative in nature. In places the language is poetically descriptive and metaphorical, which beautifies the reading while obscuring the argument, meaning that this book is not for the novice. The book provides an interpretation of San rock art; in addition, however, it offers an insight into how and why this art was produced. The author argues that the techniques used to create the art demonstrate that the artists were experts in their field. The physical aspects of the art are examined, such as positionality, background, color and content. Ego notes that the subject matter was influenced by what is apparent in the local environment, and that the customs, beliefs and ceremonies of the day were recreated in the art. When he examines the composition of the art he often fails to consider the effect that time may have had, the colors that may have faded or are now missing, and the images that have long since disappeared. Ego suggests that people created rock art as a way to understand their environment. He argues that the art helped them make sense of their lives, to express and understand abstract ideas and concepts in ways that could not be done through spoken language. The visual aspects of the art allowed the San to realize and understand their ontology. In this sense the author uses that art to support his ideas, rather than interpreting that art, as might have been expected. Given the historical time-frame of the art, Ego also attempts to envision or speculate on the necessary processes that motivated and enabled ancient peoples’ imagination to produce these works. It is these passages that engage the metaphysical, which can be challenging for a reader. Ego provides a brief but sufficient critical engagement with the main current academic interpretations of rock art. He then reiterates some traditional San stories, including creation myths, to illustrate San cosmology and ontology. Not unlike other theorists of rock art, this author suggests that through stories, dance and ritual the importance of animals in San life can be gauged and their role in rock art understood. Although Ego attests that the commonality of the
