As translation studies expands into an organized pedagogical field in U.S. higher education, we have the opportunity to implement research developed for heritage language learning to center the multilingual experience. Translation Studies informed by concepts of sociolinguistics, cultural studies, and language justice can counteract underlying assumptions and biases students may bring to the translation classroom and combat the impact of the English-only movement on our public sphere. This article suggests potential benefits for Translation Studies courses to incorporate recommended models of critical pedagogy developed for heritage language learners and offers a series of teaching units centered on the Spanish/English language pair and the language politics of Latin American and Latinx Spanish.
