Mark Polizzotti Mark Polizzotti is an award-winning translator, author, and editor. He has translated works by Gustave Flaubert, Marguerite Duras, André Breton, Raymond Roussel, Maurice Roche, Jean Echenoz, and Nobel Prize winning French author Patrick Modiano. Works of his own authorship include Bob Dylan: Highway 61 Revisited (2006), Revolution of the Mind: The Life of André Breton (1995), Lautréamont Nomad (1994), and the collaborative novel S (1991, with Florence Delay, Patrick Deville, Jean Echenoz, Harry Mathews, Sonja Greenlee, and Oliver Rilon). In addition, he has been publisher and Editor in Chief at the Metropolitan Museum of Art since 2010. In 2016, Polizzotti was awarded the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award for Literature as well as the insignia of Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters, an award given by the French Minister of Culture and Communications to artists and writers who have significantly contributed to promoting French arts throughout the world. Something Polizzotti, who is a prolific translator, said in an interview with a group of Parisian students has stayed with me since I read it. In this interview, Polizzotti advises aspiring translators to “[t]ranslate everything you can get your hands on ... thrillers, bestsellers, user’s manuals, books of all kinds, including technical texts.” This is perhaps the best piece of advice I have heard from an established translator. Our interview for TR, conducted over Skype and through e-mail, reveals Polizzotti’s experiences with the French language, his relationships with the authors he has translated, his ideas about the art and craft of translation, his own creative process, and his thoughts on how we might raise new generations of readers who appreciate works in translation, among other things.
