On Zhukovsky’s Translations, by S.S. Averintsev

Vassily Zhukovsky successfully translated some of Goethe’s most outstanding poetic works, including the “Song of the Harper” and the “Song of Mignon” from Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship, and the “Ballad of the Fisherman.” These are widely considered the most perfect poems ever written in their original German language. Unsurprisingly, the “Song of the Harper” became one of the treasures of Russian culture too, albeit in a Fëdor Tiutchev translation. Other translations by Zhukovsky from German, however, such as Friedrich Schiller’s ballads or “Night Vigil” by Joseph Christian von Zedlitz, are better known. The German original of the latter is sixty lines of inexpressive, sluggish dol’nik (the so-called Knittelvers):
