As we write this Editorial, many areas of the world are experiencing an unprecedented social lockdown as a result of the spread of COVID-19. We very much hope that, by the time this volume comes to print in June, the world will be in a much better position than it is in now, and that our readers are safe and well, both physically and mentally. We are sharply reminded in this time of limited social interaction and restricted physical movement of the importance of our varied and complex relationships to people, places and things, and of the inventive and stimulating ways people can continue to engage with each other. We hope this volume helps to contribute to the intellectual stimulation of our readership (at all times!), and provides a means for people to connect with culture, the past and place in the present, however remote they are. The papers in this volume connect us to different areas of the world across broad time periods, through hand-held objects and vast landscapes. They demonstrate the varied ways that humans deal with social and environmental pressures in creative and meaningful ways. James Green and Penny Spikins present an innovative examination of selfcontrol, its evolutionary advantages and how this might be studied in the archaeological record – in this case, through Acheulean handaxes. Throughout their paper Green and Spikins develop an approach to studying archaeological material culture whereby certain behavioural or technological innovations are recognised as markers requiring increased capacity for self-control. In this way, they open up the possibility of developingmethods for identifying this important cognitive trait within evolutionary archaeology and beyond. Ebrahim Karimi’s paper significantly expands our knowledge of rock art in Iran. He provides a thorough overview of work on the dating of Iran’s rock art and details his dating methods and results from rock art sites with abstract markings. Ethnographic studies of rock art inscriptions created by modern-day shepherds, the traditional practices of people physically engaging with archaeological sites, and markings on nomads’ tents contribute to exploring the potential functions of the abstract designs found in this rock art. Leticia Inés Cortés’s paper is a fascinating exploration of the conceptual and sensory links between heat, dryness and death during the Formative Period in the southern Calchaquí valleys, Northwest Argentina. Integrating ethnohistorical and ethnographic records with the material forms of burial tradition and the particularity of the landscape in the region, her discussion emphasises the TIME AND MIND 2020, VOL. 13, NO. 2, 115–116 https://doi.org/10.1080/1751696X.2020.1750859

2, 115–116 https://doi.org/10.1080/1751696X.2020.1750859
