Teaching and learning performance art happened inside and out of Irish art colleges from the mid 1970s when performance art ‘arrived’ in Ireland synchronous with a visit and tour of the country by Joseph Beuys. Since then, Irish artists have taught performance art to each other, sharing skills and conceptual approaches to younger generations and emerging practitioners. In the stories below, three Irish artists of different generations explore some aspects of an important pedagogic relationship that changed or affected their evolution as performance artists. The first story describes my own initiation into performance art at a workshop taught by the acclaimed artist Alanna O’Kelly in the late 80’s. Working with O’Kelly had a profound and lasting influence on my performance art practice and my own teaching philosophy subsequently. The second account is by Dominic Thorpe of his experience with Alastair MacLennan in the 00’s. Alastair taught at the University of Ulster since 1975 and continues as Emeritus professor for Fine Art. Tara Carroll’s narrative completes the trilogy. She writes of the life-changing experience of working with her lecturer Ciaran O’Keefe in recent years in Dublin. I hope these short narratives provide interesting examples of how artist-tostudent pedagogy can work in practice. They show some outcomes from the educational engagements artists create when passing the baton of practice on to the next generation. My story of O’Kelly’s workshop demonstrates that
