Abstract This note examines the implications of John Watson Dalby’s ‘Sonnet, to the Author of “Valperga”’ for the reception history of Mary Shelley’s second published novel. Omitted from Mary Shelley bibliographies and reproduced only incompletely since its initial periodical publication in May 1823, Dalby’s poem lauds Valperga (1823), defends its widowed novelist, and laments the untimely death of her husband. By adding this sonnet to previously identified Dalby works – and to known Percy Bysshe Shelley elegies – this note maps more completely interactions among Mary Shelley’s fiction, her biography, and her reception by readers familiar with both.
