Abstract This brief article analyses the manuscript of Keats’s ‘In drear nighted December’, recently acquired by the Keats-Shelley Memorial Association and now preserved at its Museum in Rome, reviewing its status alongside other versions identified by previous scholars. Among other observations, it finds Keats’s style in this poem to be consistent with that of the mature writings, not least in its repeated use of the word ‘feel’ as a noun and verb. In fact, the line in question, ‘The feel of not to feel’, is argued to express a highly Keatsian view, both in respect of sensation and the awareness of loss.
