ABSTRACT This article focuses on Percy and Mary Shelley’s approach to Madame de Staël’s works. It analyses the largely unexplored similarities between Percy Shelley’s A Defence of Poetry and de Staël’s De la littérature. It explores Mary’s approach to and translations from her works in her life of Madame de Staël for Dionysius Lardner’s Cabinet Cyclopaedia. By focusing on nineteenth-century translations and biographies and on the original French texts, this article demonstrates that both Percy and Mary Shelley responded with interest to de Staël’s analysis of the role of women in literary history, to her anti-Napoleonic stance and to her literary contribution to a cosmopolitan community of writers.
