ABSTRACT The following article explores the use of the Italian poet Torquato Tasso as a representation of the nineteenth-century Romantic hero. For many Romantic artists, Tasso was at once a historic figure worthy of admiration, and a mirror with which to examine the struggle and triumph of the artist – over himself, his fellow, and his milieu. I argue that Tasso is another iteration of the Romantic hero, and examine works by Goethe, Shelley, and Byron to explore in greater depth why the Italian poet was such an appealing type for these writers.
