Abstract Lute making is traditionally a rather conservative craft, requiring many hours of precise hands-on and thoughtful woodworking, to produce an instrument that is visually attractive, and more importantly, a working tool for musicians. In contrast, the craft of software engineering and digital production works a different medium based on textual source code and malleable abstractions. In this Statement of Practice I sketch out some themes and thinking that inform my practice as a lute maker and, where applicable, briefly discuss some similarities and differences between lute making and software development as contrasting modes of making. I explore some aspects of what a sensitive and appropriate application of digital technologies within traditional lute making practice might look like.
