Abstract Britain in the 1920s and 30 s saw both an infatuation with traditional craft work and an upsurge in amateur film-making. This article looks at the ways in which these two cultural interests intertwined. It argues that amateur films can help us to understand traditional craft as creative response to shifts in the rural economy. These films capture the commodification of craft as a seemingly quaint activity ideal for tourists to consume. They also reveal how hands-on craft labour offered a modern alternative to machine-made, mass-produced products. The act of film-making was itself part of a new manifestation of craft in modern culture and offered its own critique of mass production and mechanised society.
