Abstract Arts and cultural sector leaders are increasingly required to work internationally and across cultures—both in other countries and in their own communities. This article analyzes and integrates findings from a recent global study on arts/cultural management in international contexts within a focused investigation into international arts/cultural management education. The authors clarify key concepts and terms, and present challenges and opportunities in the field as discussed in extant scholarship. They synthesize across current research to identify specific competencies, capacities, knowledge areas, strategies, and skills that are necessary for international arts/cultural management. Then, they provide a typology of existing training programs in this highly specialized field. In the conclusion, they present three main findings from the study as pathways forward to improve capacity building for international arts/cultural management.
