Continuity and sustainability are key themes in conservation; the subject of myriad case studies and the object of policies throughout the world. Yet the achievement of such objectives in the context of development, conflict or accidental damage can seem both daunting and intractable. The five papers assembled for this volume nevertheless demonstrate the resilience of the sector in our attempts to understand and resolve the complexities raised by the historic environment in the modern world. Destruction as a result of armed conflict is all too familiar at the present time yet reconstruction has a long and complex history. Roha Khalaf’s paper focusses on reconstruction and its potential benefits. As Roha writes in the introductory abstract reconstruction can ‘re-establish the thread of continuity with a pre-conflict time and change people’s conditions for the better . . .' whilst policy ‘can help define a strategy for recovery, address underlying vulnerabilities, build resilience, regenerate livelihoods, and improve well-being’. These are important principles which can be seen in action in many of the papers of ‘Heritage under Pressure’ reviewed by Henry Chapman. Accidental damage by fire is another ever present threat, made more immediate by the bush fires raging in Australia and the April 2019 damage to the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. Yet for conservation one of the most striking aspects of the response to the Notre Dame fire was not the extent of damage or the cause of the fire but the commitment by President Macron to reconstruct and repair the damage within 5 years. The key, as Simon Kincaid warns, is clarity of purpose. A well informed and clearly defined programme of conservation is critical to successful reconstruction. In the course of preparing the current article, with its focus on the philosophical aspects of post-fire decision-making, Simon has identified a range of important practical challenges that require attention, both in the immediate aftermath of a serious fire in a historic building and in any subsequent reconstruction. An second article is in preparation which will consider these further firstly by assessing the immediate post-fire challenges (including structural viability, temporary protection, recording and archaeological salvage), before going on to evaluate the challenges, and in some cases opportunities, that might be presented in subsequent reconstruction, if indeed this is the appropriate option. Inappropriate use, neglect and redundancy are critical factors in the erosion of the historic environment and there is a long tradition of case studies exemplifying the adaptive re-use of historic buildings. Today adaptive re-use is recognised as an emerging discipline with its own body of developing theory and practice. In 2019 Plevoets and Van Cleempoel reviewed the historic background of re-use from a spontaneous process in the 19 century to the present day. Several papers in this journal have presented projects and case studies highlighting the huge variety and potential for re-use whilst acknowledging an underlying rationale or subtext to many proposals. These are often contested, both at the inception of a project and during its implementation or operational period.

1,1-3 https://doi.org/10.1080/17567505.2020.1717036
