In a hidden corner of the North Burial Ground in Providence, RI, is an assemblage of monuments that, from a distance, resembles a typical nineteenth-century family plot. The marble obelisk in the center of this plot is almost identical to countless others used to commemorate families in the cemeteries of the American Northeast, and there are many similar obelisks in the North Burial Ground (Figure 1). But closer inspection reveals important idiosyncrasies. Instead of the name of a family, as would appear on the other obelisks in the cemetery, this obelisk bears the word “SHELTER” and, in a different engraving style, “Home for Aged Colored Women.” The opposite side of the obelisk is inscribed with a verse from the Gospels: “Jesus said, suffer little children to come unto me” (Figure 2). In the context of nineteenth-century New England, the obelisk evokes normative middle-class ideals surrounding the family, its essential unity and permanence, and its role in forming individual identities and social status, as well as Classical aesthetics.
