History's Value to Conflict and Security Studies in Africa

INTRODUCTION States and societies around the world face conflicts and security problems. None can be indifferent to the phenomena of violence, terrorism, and the deaths of hundreds and thousands of people. An increase in terrorist activities in Africa has meant that security problems in that continent have become ever more important. In response, many African universities have developed resources in the field of security studies, and several research centers have been created. As J. O. Aremu noted, “The history of Africa as a continent is replete with conflict. One may even assert that the major current that runs through Africa: from the North to South, East to West and Central is conflicts and wars.” Publications on conflicts and security issues in Africa are numerous. However, questions remain about how conflicts and security problems in Africa have been hitherto tackled, and if the predominant approach is sufficient. In many universities in Africa and elsewhere, conflict and security studies are considered part of political science, international relations, or other social science disciplines. Unsurprisingly, then, the field often reflects the methodological imperatives and inclinations of those disciplines. I will contend below that the importance
