In this issue, we present four studies that explore on a micro level several important aspects of a broader argument for a “New Aufkl€arung/New Enlightenment” – a critical reconsideration of the historicity of Enlightenment as well as a resemanticization of the concept of “Aufkl€arung”, in order to explore new systematic approaches and understandings of Enlightenment within the German-speaking context and its far-reaching implications for the understanding of enlightenment as a procedure and Enlightenment as an era. The origin of the essays goes back to one of the inaugural seminars at the German Studies Association conference in 2013. The frame for the seminar that we mapped out at that time included heuristic suggestions for historical and methodological cornerstones for new and programmatic visions of Aufkl€arung/Enlightenment. To provide the context for the studies presented here, we include this (slightly modified) version of the seminar proposal:
